An Honourable Death

An Honourable Death

Etching hand printed in black on Hahnemuhle paper

22 x 23 inches

I started drawing ritual kites over 10 years ago after learning of a Taoist tradition where kites are flown at funerals to celebrate the life just lost and to scare away evil spirits. Despite the title, this piece was actually made in reference to the intensity of life, rather than any literal death, and the forces of change which can bring their own tumult and suffering. This plate was drawn and re-etched multiple times over the course of several months, traveling back and forth across the city with me during a period of personal difficulty and struggle, but ultimately one where great transformation and transcendence was learned.
